I have personal lost 3 relatives to prostate cancer. Obviously all were male on my father's side. It hit them all at the age of 65. So this one hits home and I am actually prepared to deal with this personally.

Here are a few things you can do to lower your chances of having to deal with this.

Know your family history for the condition

Unfortunately, there are two risk factors of prostate cancer which a man can't avoid, no matter what he does. First is aging. As you know, everyone grows old. And with aging comes the greater possibility of developing tumors in the gland. The older you get, the higher your risk becomes. The only thing you can do about this is to try to live as healthily as possible.

The second factor is genes. Unfortunately, men who have family members who suffered (or are suffering) from the disease have a higher possibility of having it too. It would help to know your family history of the condition so you can take extra precaution when it comes to preventing it.

Stop smoking

Remember: All the effects of smoking are deadly, not only to you but the people you love too. If you want to live longer or you want them to live longer, you'd better start throwing all those cigarettes away. While there may not be a solid study claiming that the habit can cause cancer, there have already been a number of researches which show that smoking can make the condition A LOT worse. In addition, it can also make the side effects of treatments worse.

Stop drinking alcohol

Yes, if it were a person, prostate cancer can be such a killjoy. However, it's not a person, and if you don't take it seriously, it's indeed going to kill you. You see, drinking too much alcohol will lead nowhere good. For one, it increases the level of testosterone hormone. This hormone is responsible in making your gland grow. Thing is, when you have very high level of testosterone, it is also stimulates your cells and tissues to grow unnecessarily. Eventually, it can make the situation conducive for the development of cancerous cells.

Adapt a healthy diet

Perhaps the first benefit of adapting a healthy diet is it provides you with the nutrition you need to function normally. Second, it prevents you from gaining weight. If you didn't know yet, people who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of having prostate cancer or any cancer for that matter. Hence, a diet which can nourish you and maintain a healthy weight can be a fabulous way on how to prevent prostate cancer.

Exercise

If you are overweight, exercising ASAP is a must. Regular physical activity can help you shed some pounds off. If you don't have time to go to the gym or jog around, make sure that all your physical activities each day would serve as your exercise. For instance, if your job requires you to walk around or go up and down the building, might as well use the stairs and walk around more. Exercise will add years to life, if you enjoy life; go for a run.

Relax and enjoy life more

Yes, relaxing and enjoying life more can help with how to prevent prostate cancer. Stress, especially from major events in life, can throw the hormones berserk and have an ugly effect in one's health in the long run. It would be beneficial to always take some time off and get away from daily routine, particularly when something stressful just happened.
